In today's world, semantics has come to play a large role in metadata management. From data warehousing and enterprise application integration systems to enterprise search, the need for modeling semantic relationships between multi-word metadata has become apparent. Enterprise thesauruses are necessary tools to enable the discovery of such semantic relationships.

Thesauruses that are meant for embedding as an integral part of larger metadata management systems have to meet different requirements than the online thesauruses now available. First, unlike the online thesauruses which are meant for occasional use by a large number of users in a standalone fashion, integrated thesauruses are meant for frequent use by a smaller number of users within an enterprise. Secondly, since they are likely to be used as part of an informational retrieval engine, they must return objective scores of relationship similarity that can be utilized in deriving overall semantic relationships between metadata items. Finally, they should be in a readily-integrable form with published APIs, for easy adoption into other vendor's software.
